Guardian vs Parallel Search API

Guardian vs Parallel Search API: pricing, speed, and agent search

Parallel is one of the closest price competitors to Guardian. Its Turbo and Fast search modes are listed at $1 per 1,000 requests for 10 results. Guardian Scale works out to about $0.999 per 1,000 ten-result searches, while Guardian Growth and Developer cost more per request.

Guardian pricing

Guardian charges one credit per started block of 10 requested search results. The effective rates below assume each search requests 10 results or fewer and the included monthly credits are fully used.

Parallel Search API pricing

Plan / modePriceIncludedEffective search price
TurboPAYG10 results$1 / 1KParallel lists about 200 ms latency.
FastPAYG10 results$1 / 1KParallel lists about 700 ms latency.
BasicPAYG10 results$5 / 1KLonger excerpts; about 1 second listed latency.
AdvancedPAYG10 results$5 / 1KMulti-hop retrieval; about 3 seconds listed latency.

Parallel lists Search at $0.001 to $0.005 per request for 10 results. Turbo and Fast are $1 per 1,000; Basic and Advanced are $5 per 1,000. Parallel also lists page extraction separately.

At the floor, the prices are effectively tied

Guardian Scale is $999 for 1,000,000 credits. A search requesting up to 10 results uses one credit, which works out to $0.999 per 1,000 searches. Parallel Turbo and Fast are $1 per 1,000 ten-result requests. The difference is one tenth of one cent per thousand calls, which is not a useful reason to choose a provider.

Guardian Growth is $1.245 per 1,000 and Developer is $1.96, so Parallel Turbo and Fast are cheaper at those Guardian commitment levels. Parallel Basic and Advanced move to $5 per 1,000, making Guardian cheaper when those deeper modes are the relevant comparison.

Parallel sells explicit speed and depth modes

Parallel separates search behavior into Turbo, Fast, Basic, and Advanced modes. Its product page publishes approximate latency targets from roughly 200 milliseconds to 3 seconds and describes deeper modes as returning longer excerpts or using multi-hop retrieval.

Guardian does not expose that same mode ladder. It exposes a consistent search contract with engine selection, result count, pagination, locale, safe search, and verticals. Guardian's agent mode, SDK, and MCP layer sit on top of the same search platform rather than changing the base search price by retrieval mode.

Benchmark the whole agent loop

Parallel publishes strong agent-search benchmarks, but your query distribution may not look like those evals. Run the same tool-calling loop with both providers and measure successful task rate, median and tail latency, tool calls per task, and total search cost.

A $1 search that prevents a follow-up call can beat a $0.999 search that needs two calls. The reverse is also true when the cheaper provider already gives the agent enough evidence. Task-level measurement will tell you more than the headline CPM.

Which one fits your workload?

Choose Guardian when

  • You want multi-engine web search plus verticals such as news, shopping, finance, travel, images, videos, and discussions.
  • You want the same commercial key and quota system across REST, TypeScript SDK, and MCP.
  • You prefer predictable plan-based billing and can use the included monthly volume.
  • Guardian performs as well or better on your own task-level retrieval benchmark.

Choose Parallel Search API when

  • You want $1 per 1,000 requests without committing to Guardian Scale volume.
  • Published low-latency Turbo or Fast modes match an interactive or voice-agent workload.
  • Parallel's compressed excerpts and deeper Basic or Advanced retrieval improve your task success rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Guardian cheaper than Parallel?

Guardian Scale is effectively tied with Parallel Turbo and Fast for ten-result requests: about $0.999 versus $1 per 1,000. Guardian Growth and Developer cost more than Parallel Turbo/Fast, while Guardian is cheaper than Parallel's $5 per 1,000 Basic and Advanced modes.

Which is faster, Guardian or Parallel?

Parallel publishes approximate latency targets for its search modes, including about 200 ms for Turbo and 700 ms for Fast. Guardian does not currently publish a comparable latency SLA for each self-serve tier, so latency should be benchmarked on your own queries.

Does Guardian have an agent integration?

Yes. Guardian exposes agent-oriented search, a TypeScript SDK, and MCP. The business account can meter REST and MCP usage under the same quota system.
